Smokey Bear's Human Dad Died

 Posted by Syrah Merlot on 2000/12/23 14:46:54 US/Eastern Ray Bell, the guy who rescued a bear cub who became Smokey the Bear from a forest fire, died of cancer on Thursday. The cub's original name was Hot Foot Teddy, but the US Forest Service wanted a living representative of its bear cartoon character, so Teddy was brought to the National Zoo in Washington and given a name change. Teddy/Smokey lived for 26 years and died in 1976.
