Deck Us All With Boston Charlie
Comics
Posted by Albert Alligator on 2000/12/13 00:38:12 US/Eastern

It's a good time of year to remind us all of the late, great Pogo comic strip and sing all known verses of his most famous Chrispness carol. (No, not "Good King Sauerkraut look out / On your feets uneven...")Here's the first verse to get you started, and get thee to http://www.nauticom.net/www/chuckm/bark.htm for the rest:"Deck us all with Boston Charlie,Walla Walla Wash. and KalamazooNora's freezing on the trolleySwaller dollar cauliflower, Alli-Garoo...!"

Why not "Good King Sauerkraut. . . ."? That's the one I've been trying to recall words to. "Many versions of Deck us all. . ." are available on the web(456 returned at google). Can somebody please help with King Sauerkraut?

        I recall the words thus:

        Good King Sauerkraut- Look out!
        On his feets uneven-
While his nose just run about
        A'sniffin' and a'sneezin'!

          I'm pretty sure:
          Good King Sauerkraut looked out,
          On his feets uneven,
While the snoo lay round about,
          All kerchoo acheiven.

And that's all I can remember - sorry,
          Bob A.

This is the way I remember it:
          Good King saerkraut look out
          On his feets uneven
And the snoo lay round about
(Here is where the rabbit says, Snoo?
What's snoo?" And the other rabbit says, "Not much, what's new with you?")

      The song usually ran:

      "Good King Sauerkraut, look out!
      On yo' feets uneven.
While the snoo lay roun' about,
      All kerchoo achievin'."

There was never any more after that, at which point the following exchange would occur with whatever two characters were present:

      "'Kerchoo'?"
      "Gesundheit. Uh, what's 'snoo'?"
"I dunno. What's new with you?"

There was one time when Pogo said, "Hold it. It's King Wenceslas"

Churchy (I think) said, "Hear that? Winklehof is King."

        Albert: "What happened to Sauerkraut?"

Churchy: "I dunno, he must of died"

Albert: "Died? I didn't know he was sick."

        On your feets uneven.

        Nine and ten, eleeven.

I have the cartoon framed on my wall. Pogo is telling gater and froggy that they have to practice for the Christmas pagent. Gator starts in with his banjo blasting out Deck us all with Boston Charley and froggy has booming out his "bum bum bums" to keep time. As Pogo cringes with an "Owp!" Gator goes right into Good King Sauerkraut, but only gets as far as "feets uneven" when Pogo cuts him off and corrects him "Wenceslas! Wenceslas was king! And they is too many bums in your song." To which Gator replied "We is not bums and we'll just take our singing elsewhere."

This is reminiscent of another sequence in which the three bats return to their hollow tree at night and prepare to go to sleep. The last one into bed becomes irritated by his room mates' messy housekeeping and mutters loudly about clothes left on the floor, things not put away, etc. The noise wakens his comrades, one of who yelps in alarm, "WHAT'S WRONG?!", and he responds, "I say people gotta stop being BUMS." The third bat asks blearily, "Can't we wait till morning?"

Here's all of it:

Deck us all with Boston Charlie,
Walla Walla, Wash., and Kalamazoo!
Nora's freeaing on the trolley,
Swaller dollar cauliflower,
Alley-Garoo.

Don't we know archaic barrel,
Lullaby Lilla Boy, Louisville Lou?
Trolley Molly don't love Harold;
Boola boola Pensacoola,
Hullabaloo!

As I recall, the words to the song about King Sauerkraut changed every year to some degree. It's likely that everyone is right.
