Now this is pretty cool, if you have some unused cat food cans, lumber, coat hangers and aluminum foil hanging around the house. You can built your own replica of the first Edison phonograph:http://freeweb.pdq.net/headstrong/phono.htmEverybody knows his first recording, right?

Here's another diagram. It's a reproduction of the Harper's Weekly newspaper that came out shortly after Edison announced his talking machine.

No, nor was it "What hath God wrought" (long-dstance telegraph). Nor even "qwertypoiuyt" (the first test internet e-mail message).
It was "Mary Had a Little Lamb," recited by Mr. Edison himself. It was, he said, the only invention that actually worked right the very first time he tried it.

if one has axcess to an old reproducer from an old phonograph it records & plays much better.
