The Sturgis
Rally and Races. Every August, motorcyclists head out to the Black
Hills in South Dakota's biggest tourist event. The town of Sturgis,
population 6,000, suddenly gets engulfed by a quarter million bikers
The first Rally was held in 1938, organized by J.C. "Pappy"
Hoel, the local dealer for Indian Motorcycles. The nineteen participants
raced a half-mile track and then demonstrated stunts that nowadays
are only executed by accident: jumping ramps, crashing through plywood
walls, and ramming head-on into an automobile.
Nowadays,
attendance is about a quarter million humans and the constant roar
of hogs can be heard many miles into the countryside. The seven
days of activities include races, drinking and occasional public
lewdity, cruising the main street, and touring through the countryside
— but much less chaos than you'd expect
in a state that normally only has 600,000 residents.

Harley-Davidson Museum and Factory Tour, historic hogs and new Harley
— all in the same trip. Combination museum-and-plsnt tour at
