Buzz Lightyear in 3-D? This from the New York Times story:

"Even if computer animation is intended to be viewed in two dimensions (as on a computer terminal), every object it presents must be mathematically defined in three. [A different piece of software afterward determines from what vantage point in the scene the "camera" will be.] It took a stroke of genius to recognize the implications. As long as the original data survived, "Toy Story" — or any other computer-animated material — could be "reshot" in 3- D merely by generating the slightly shifted "companion" frame for each frame of the original film."
