An article in the NT Times today says viewership for "Millionaire" is down about 16 percent from where it was at the close of last season. Says the Times: "This season 'Millionaire' is down about 25 percent among viewers between the ages of 18 and 49, the main group that ABC sells to advertisers, a shortfall that is forcing ABC to give away commercial time free to some advertisers."

Still, "Millionaire" fans needn't worry: its 20 million viewers four times a week still provides good ad dollars, and even with the giveaways it costs only about half as much to produce as an hour-long entertainment program.

Meanwhile, producers are going to try to make it appeal again to a younger audience. Blaming their fading ratings on the number of "40ish white guys in a blue shirt," they intend to abandon their random telephone screening process and recruit the right mix of people by gender, age, race and ethnic background, and shirt color.
